Relevant Statistics

Each year over 7 million people are released from local jails.1,2

Approximately, 2 out of every 3 people released will be rearrested within 3 years of their release.3

American taxpayers went from spending approximately 9 billion a year in 1995 on corrections to over 60 billion in 2002.4

The number of women incarcerated in the US rose by 50% from 68,468 in 1995 to 101,179 in 2003.5

Women are significantly more likely to be incarcerated for non-violent offenses than their male counterparts, such as larceny, fraud, theft and drug possession and sales.6

One in four women has no idea where she will stay on the date she is scheduled to be release back to the community and believes she will be homeless.7

Greater than 10% of those coming in and out of jail are homeless in the months before their incarceration.8

A woman released from jail is 5 ½ times more likely to die in the first two weeks after release than any other woman.9

70% of women detained in local jails report they have at least one child under 18 years of age.10

Significantly, 1 in 6 jail inmates report that they dropped out of school.11

More than 80% of all inmates report a history of drug or alcohol use. Two-thirds of convicted jail inmates admit they were “actively involved in drugs” prior to their arrest. 36% were using drugs or alcohol at the time of their offense.12

Only 3% of jail inmates participate in formal drug or alcohol treatment while incarcerated.13

Inmates who participate in treatment programs while incarcerated have a 9 to 18% lower rate of recidivism and 15 to 35% lower drug relapse rates than their counterparts who receive no treatment.
